Protein, Productivity & Nourishment: Why What We Eat Matters at Work

February 2026

The average working adult needs steady energy to engage in high-pressure work and long mental tasks that are increasingly demanded by our workplaces. A balanced diet is crucial to maintaining long-term health and productivity. Protein is an essential component of a balanced diet and plays a vital role in supporting muscle health, metabolism, and overall body function. However, it is often overlooked despite its importance to long-term health.

The Protein Under-Nourishment Among Working Adults
According to research, many South Asian working adults are protein-deficient even when they have access to foods high in protein. A recent peer-reviewed study by ICRISAT, IFPRI, and the CESS produced alarming results, showing that over two-thirds of households in semi-arid regions of India consume less protein, despite protein sources being sufficiently available. "Without targeted efforts to promote diverse diets and educate communities on the importance of protein, malnutrition will persist," noted Dr Kumar, the study’s lead researcher and the Deputy Global Research Program Director of the Enabling Systems Transformation Program at ICRISAT. This highlights that protein undernourishment is not always about unavailability, but cultural preferences and limited awareness also shape dietary decisions among working adults.

Impact on Productivity and Focus
Does protein intake matter for focus and productivity? Protein plays a critical role in maintaining muscle mass and supporting many essential physiological functions, including cell growth and repair, muscle maintenance, and metabolic processes that contribute to sustained physical capacity.
Inadequate protein intake, particularly when combined with aging, low physical activity, or insufficient overall energy intake, can contribute to loss of muscle mass and reduced physical resilience. For working professionals, this may translate into lower stamina, increased fatigue, and difficulty maintaining consistent performance over long or demanding workdays.
Beyond physical function, protein also supports brain health. Amino acids derived from dietary protein are required for the synthesis of neurotransmitters involved in cognition, attention, and mood regulation. When protein intake is insufficient, these processes may be affected, which can contribute to reduced concentration and mental fatigue over time, especially in older adults.

Protein Across the Lifespan
Protein plays a vital role in growth, development, and overall health at every stage of life. Beyond supporting physical and cognitive performance, adequate intake contributes to immune strength and recovery from illness. In children and adolescents, sufficient protein supports healthy growth and helps strengthen immune defenses during critical developmental years.

This importance continues into adulthood, where adequate protein intake supports recovery from physical stress and injury while helping maintain overall resilience. Research indicates that individuals with lower protein intake are more likely to miss school or work due to illness or injury, underscoring the role of protein in sustaining health and productivity. Other studies highlight that while discussions about sustainable diets frequently focus on plant-based patterns, protein quality remains critical to preventing deficiencies and ensuring optimal growth, performance, and productivity at all ages.

Simple Protein Interventions at Work
Protein undoubtedly improves strength and productivity among working adults, which is all the more reason for workplaces to adopt simple protein interventions. While home-cooked meals can be adapted to our protein needs, many working professionals are simply too busy. This is why intentional nutrition practices at work can greatly benefit the health of working adults. Some initiatives could be:

  • Better cafeteria menus with nourishing, protein-rich snacks and meals
  • Workplace nutrition programs that provide practical guidance on balanced, protein-inclusive meals

Policymakers and businesses must prioritise access to protein to maintain a healthy and productive workforce. Building a fruitful career does not simply depend on showing up to work; it also requires deliberate and sustainable approaches to improve long-term health, to which protein intake is critical.
