Celebrating National Nutrition Month
Established in 1973, the National Nutrition Month by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics invites people around the world to consider the food choices that shape their health and well-being. This year's theme, "Discover the Power of Nutrition", is a reminder to take a step back and reflect on our eating habits.
Building Healthy Habits All Month Long
National Nutrition Month is the ideal time to assess your eating habits and make meaningful changes. Improving your nutrition does not always involve big lifestyle changes. You can start by making small additions to your main meals. A diet rich in adequate protein, whole grains, healthy fats and a colourful variety of fruits and vegetables has the power to nourish our bodies and help us perform better. For us South Asians, food is usually a shared experience, and it will be even easier to stick to better eating habits if you can get your friends and family involved.
Healthy Eating in Your Daily Routine
Building healthy eating habits does not have to be complicated, even with a busy schedule. Planning your meals before grocery shopping is a great way to ensure protein-rich foods and whole grains, as well as fruits and vegetables, make it into your cart consistently. One helpful tool when grocery shopping is the Nutrition Facts label, as it can help you to determine which foods are best for you.
If you want to incorporate more plant-based meals into your diet, make sure you get enough protein, vitamins, and minerals. For example, if you're looking for plant-based dairy alternatives, some drinks contain added sugars for flavour and only a small amount of protein. It is important to choose alternatives like soy milk and soy yoghurt that have similar nutrition to cow’s milk.
Also, when choosing snacks, focus on nourishing your body rather than reaching for foods high in empty calories. Greek yoghurt, boiled eggs or roasted chickpeas are all great snack choices. If you are someone constantly on the go, keeping portable, healthy snacks on hand is a great way to stay on top of your nutrition goals.
The Essential Role of Protein in Nutrition
At Right to Protein, we aim to educate and empower communities to make better decisions for their nutrition. Good nutrition benefits our bodies at every level, including brain function, immune health, energy, and mood. One essential nutrient for overall health is protein. Protein serves as the foundation for muscles, tissues, enzymes, and hormones, so the body cannot function properly without it. However, in many South Asian households, carbohydrate-heavy staples such as rice and roti take centre stage at mealtimes, while protein-rich foods are treated as an afterthought. Whether you are an athlete, an older adult looking to maintain muscle mass, or simply someone looking to stay energised throughout the day, prioritising protein is one of the most impactful nutritional decisions you can make. Our South Asian diets offer excellent protein sources, including dal, paneer, soy, eggs, seafood and lean meats.
The first step in improving your protein intake is knowing whether you are currently consuming enough. Check out our Protein-O-Meter tool at the Right to Protein website to see whether your daily protein intake measures up, or take the pledge today and support us in nourishing our communities. This National Nutrition Month, remember that the power of nutrition lies in the small, consistent changes you make to your daily diet.
